Happy New Year! 2017 went by in a flash! I thought I would get the new year started off on the right foot by setting some blog goals for 2018.
When it comes to goal setting I have a terrible habit of setting WAY too many, really big goals! Many people do the same thing. What I have learned though, is that it is easier to reach goals when you only have a few big goals that you are striving for.
If you think about it, then it totally makes sense. You are more likely to succeed in reaching 3 big goals rather than 10 big goals. Narrowing down to the 3 most important goals is the hard part though! I spent the better half of December trying to nail down the 3 goals that were most important to me.
How I narrowed down to my top 3 goals.
First, I made a list of goals I wanted to accomplish this year. The list consisted of 23 pretty significant goals. These weren’t just blog goals, they were also personal goals.
Next, I decided to take out the personal goals because I already had a game plan for 2 of my biggest personal goals (thanks to my super awesome adviser): finish my BA in Writing and apply for the Master’s program I want to attend. Along with these 2 big personal goals were seven smaller personal goals and many were already outlined in my educational game plan. So I crossed those off my list.
This left me with 14 blog goals for 2018!
Realistically, I knew that this was still way too many goals. So I sat down and really thought about what I wanted to happen with the blog this year. My mentor challenged me to narrow down to 3 things that would make the greatest impact on my life.
I wanted this year to be the year that I make some real money. Up to this point, I am making pennies per day off one lonely ad and an affiliate sale here and there.
I also want the money I make to consist of MOSTLY passive income. This means I do the work up front and let the blog do the rest. This also means I need tons of PAGEVIEWS!
Finally, I wanted to increase my social media presence to include all platforms! I have been focusing all my efforts on Pinterest and while it is paying off in page views, I do realize that brands want influencers with a great social media reach.
Really what these things boiled down to was that I wanted the blog to become a full-scale business by the end of 2018.
After identifying these 3 things, I needed to turn them into very specific goals.
Okay, so I wanted to make real money. That’s pretty vague. How much money would it take for me to feel like I am making a real income?
The number I came up with is $5000 dollars. Why $5000? Because that is roughly what my husband makes each month. This is going to sound morbid, but if something happened to him and he could no longer work, I would need to be able to cover things. At $5000 a month, we also live pretty comfortably. So that is my goal: to be clearing $5000 a month to be the end of 2018.
I need lots of page views to make the bulk of my income passively. The magic number for making significant income from ad revenue is 100,000 monthly pageviews. I’m also going to be looking into different marketing intelligence solutions to see if there’s any way I’m able to improve ad revenue by any means necessary, using a revenue platform I’d be able to see which ad is performing the best, not just a total revenue figure by the end of the month, I feel this could greatly help how I run my ads efficiently.
So that is goal number 2: to hit 100,000 monthly page views by the end of 2018.
Increasing social media presence across all platforms…AKA: master my Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram accounts.
I do want to work with brands eventually so this is something that I really need to focus on. I am not even sure what “follower goals” I should be shooting for here.
How am I going to accomplish these blog goals for 2018?
I have broken them down into actionable steps based on my research. Will it be easy? Nope. The best things in life never come easily. I see some really long days and nights in my future.
I am not even totally sure that my research will bring me to my goals or not. Blogging is really just one big experiment! There are so many variables at play that no two blogging success stories will ever be the same! However, I will continue to document my hits and misses.
